How To Find the Perfect Baby Carrier

As a mother of two, I’ve discovered firsthand the convenience and closeness that babywearing provides.

From running errands to soothing a fussy infant, a good baby carrier can be a parent’s best friend.

However, with a variety of options available, choosing the right carrier can feel overwhelming.

Let’s explore the various carrier options, along with their pros and cons, to help you find the perfect fit for you and your little one.

Wrap Carriers

Pros:

– Provides a customizable fit for both parent and baby.

– Suitable for newborns and can accommodate growing infants.

– Promotes skin-to-skin contact, which is beneficial for bonding.

– Lightweight and easy to pack for travel.

Cons:

– Requires practice to master the wrapping technique.

– Some parents may find it time-consuming to put on and adjust.

– May not provide as much support for long periods of wear, especially as the baby grows heavier.

Wrap carriers were my go-to choice when my babies were newborns. While it took some practice to get the wrapping technique just right, the closeness and comfort they provided made it all worth it. The one I used and LOVED was the Moby carrier.

Soft-Structured Carriers

Pros:

– Quick and easy to put on, with buckles and straps for adjustment.

– Offers good support for both parent and baby, making it ideal for longer wear.

– Many models come with ergonomic designs to promote healthy hip development in infants.

– Suitable for a wide range of activities, from hiking to household chores.

Cons:

– Less customizable fit compared to wrap carriers.

– May not be as breathable as some other options, leading to discomfort in warmer weather.

– Some models may have a higher price point.

Soft-structured carriers became my favorite choice as my babies grew older. They provided excellent support for longer outings and allowed me to keep up with my active lifestyle while keeping my little ones close. With Liam I used the BabyBjorn One and with Emily I’m still using the Ergobaby Omni Breeze and I love both of them!

Ring Slings

Pros:

– Offers a quick and adjustable way to carry your baby.

– Can be used for newborns and older babies.

– Versatile and easy to adjust for different caregivers.

Cons:

– Weight distribution may not be as even compared to other carriers.

– Some parents may find the one-shoulder design less comfortable, especially with heavier babies.

– Learning to adjust the rings and fabric properly may take some practice.

While I didn’t use ring slings, I appreciate their simplicity and convenience.

Pre-Wrapped Carriers

Pros:

– Combines the benefits of wrap and structured designs, offering a customizable fit with the convenience of buckles.

– Provides good support for both parent and baby.

– Suitable for newborns to toddlers.

Cons:

– May require some practice to learn the tying technique.

– Less widely available compared to other carrier options.

– Some models may lack the padding and support of traditional Structured carriers.

I didn’t personally use one, but it sounds like the perfect carrier that combines the things I love in both of the designs I did use. In this category you can find the Boba Bliss and the Momcozy.

Finding the perfect baby carrier is a personal journey that depends on your preferences, lifestyle, and your baby’s needs.

Whether you choose a wrap, soft-structured carrier, ring sling, or pre wrapped, the important thing is to find a carrier that feels comfortable and secure for both you and your little one.

So, explore your options, try out different carriers if possible, and enjoy the wonderful bonding experience that babywearing provides.
